Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: a cool-temperate to arctic-alpine, circumpolar species found on limestone and dolomite, more rarely on other calciferous rocks (e.g. sandstone and schist); one of the most common calcicolous species above and near treeline throughout the Alps.
