Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: a temperate to arctic species of calcareous rocks, mostly on steeply inclined or underhanging faces in open, dry situations, sometimes invading the thalli of endolithic lichens, with a wide altitudinal range; widespread throughout the Alps.
