Substrate: bark, lignum, siliceous rocks

Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)

Note: a cool-temperate to circumboreal-montane lichen found on dry, shaded parts of the trunks of deciduous and coniferous trees, on faces protected from rain, sometimes on lignum, with a wide altitudinal range; widespread and common throughout the Alps.
