Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a species resembling M. peliocarpa, but the areolate thallus with flat to capitate, green soralia, and often somewhat stipitate apothecia; on bark of various trees and on branches of dwarf shrubs in sites with an oceanic climate, therefore most common in Western Europe, with a few records from the Eastern and Central Alps.
