Substrate: calciferous rocks, intermediate rocks (such as calciferous schists)
Altitudinal range: from the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: on calcareous rocks in upland areas, often near summits. Similar to C. coccinea, but differing in morphology, thallus colour, altitudinal distribution (not restricted to above treeline) and in its parasitism on Clauzadea immersa; widespread in the Alps.
