Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)

Note: this recently-described corticolous species grows on the nutrient-rich or moderately eutrophicated rough bark of a wide range of both deciduous and evergreen trees. Common in the Central Iberian Peninsula, it is also known from the southern Euro-Asiatic region (Italy, Austria, France, Greece, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tadzhikistan), and from North Africa (Morocco). It might have been confused with Ph. distorta, and might be more frequent.
