Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a mild-temperate, holarctic species with a minutely squamulose thallus developing laminal soralia; specimens with poorly developed squamules and marginal soralia may belong to either C. efflorescens or C. xanthostigmoidea; on isolated trees, especially along waysides and in agricultural areas; widespread throughout the Alps.
