Substrate: calciferous soil, acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata), calciferous rocks

Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)

Note: a mainly boreal-montane to arctic-alpine, circumpolar lichen found on terricolous bryophytes and on more or less organic calciferous soil in upland areas; widespread throughout the Alps.
