Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers)
Note: closely related to the non-sorediate C. pyxidata and rich in ecotypes, several morphologically similar taxa with differing secondary chemistry are treated separately, specimens with unknown chemistry are usually listed here; on acid soil, rotten wood or mossy rocks; widespread on all continents; common throughout the Alps from the lowlands to the alpine belt.
