Substrate: bark, lignum, plant debris, acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata)
Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a widespread, holarctic species found on a wide variety of organic substrata, including bark, and then mostly on basal parts of boles, but mostly on soil rich in humus and on rotten wood, with a wide altitudinal range; widespread and common throughout the Alps.
