Cladonia arbuscula (Wallr.) Flot. subsp. squarrosa (Wallr.) Ruoss

Syn.: Cladina arbuscula (Wallr.) Hale & W.L. Culb. subsp. squarrosa (Wallr.) Burgaz, Cladonia squarrosa (Wallr.) Flot., Patellaria coccinea Wallr. var. squarrosa Wallr., Patellaria squarrosa (Wallr.) Wallr.
Lichenised.
Substrate: acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata), calciferous soil, living mosses, lignum, bark
Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers)
Note: this is the most widespread subspecies of the C. arbuscula-complex in the Alps; several records listed under C. arbuscula subsp. arbuscula could refer to this taxon. In the recent Nordic Lichen Flora, however, the psoromic acid strain is regarded as a taxonomically unimportant chemotype.
