Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)

Note: a mainly temperate species found on more or less isolated trees (depending on air humidity); more common in the past, presently absent from urban areas but locally still frequent in humid, semi-natural habitats, more wide-ranging in altitude and latitude than the closely related C. subnigrescens; widespread in the Alps, but only locally common.
