Lichenised.
Substrate: siliceous rocks, acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata)
Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers)
Note: a widespread holarctic lichen found on siliceous rocks, more rarely on soil, with a wide altitudinal range. Formerly frequently confused with similar species. The species, in its present circumscription, seems to be heterogeneous; widespread throughout the Alps.
