Substrate: calciferous rocks, calciferous soil
Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: an arctic-alpine, circumpolar, peculiar species with subfruticose thalli consisting of several mm long, narrow, more or less erect squamules recalling those of Endocarpon-species with cushion-like thalli (the genus in which the species was traditionally classified); on calciferous soil, sometimes on calcareous rocks; most records from the Alps need re-confirmation.
