Altitudinal distribution: subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: in appearance and ascoma anatomy this species resembles A. ligniaria, but the hymenium is lower and the ascospores smaller; mostly on rotting wood of stumps, but also on bark; widespread in Western and Northern Europe, and also reported from the Swiss Alps.
