Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus)
Note: a species with a granular to rimose-areolate, greyish to brownish thallus, and non-pruinose apothecia with red-brown to blackish discs and thin, later excluded thalline margins; on nutrient-enriched siliceous rocks in the supralittoral zone, often in crevices and overhangs; widespread in SW Europe and Macaronesia, but not common, with a few records from the Western Alps (Italy).
