Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a silicicolous species resembling H. alpivaga, but with a strongly reduced thallus and smaller apothecia, usually parasitic on Placynthium; in Western Europe it is mainly coastal, and the central and eastern European historical records are in need of critical re-evaluation; in the study area it is known from a single locality in the Western Alps.
