Substrate: acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata), siliceous rocks, intermediate rocks (such as calciferous schists)
Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus)
Note: a mild-temperate to Mediterranean species found on calciferous sandstone and other base-rich siliceous rocks in warm-dry areas, mostly at low elevations; apparently more frequent in the Western and Southern Alps.
