Substrate: metal-rich siliceous rocks

Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers)

Note: a species with a conspicuous, grey-green to yellow-green, areolate thallus (due to the presence of rhizocarpic acid), with marginal soralia on the areoles; on metal-rich rocks (Fe, Cu), usually in well-lit habitats; widespread in Europe, including the Alps, except in some countries where suitable rocks are rare.
