Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a sorediate species of the L. subfusca-group with the chemistry of L. circumborealis, characterised by roundish, usually not confluent soralia; usually on wood, occasionally on bark, including branches of subalpine shrubs (Rhododendron) at high elevations; widespread in the Alps but regionally undercollected, being often sterile.
