Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: a cool-temperate to arctic-alpine, circumpolar species found on hard, often mineral-rich siliceous rocks in upland areas, which sometimes starts the life-cycle as a parasite of other crustose lichens, especially Aspicilia-species; widespread and common in the Alps.
