Altitudinal distribution: montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a species resembling M. polycarpella in the presence of a large-celled photobiont and the occurrence of a greenish pigment in apothecia and pycnidia, but the black apothecia are plane to subconvex, with a distinct exciple, and the ascospores are simple, ellipsoid to ovoid; usually on loose siliceous pebbles in pioneer communities; widespread in Europe but not common, perhaps often overlooked; in the study area so far only recorded from the Eastern Alps (Austria).
