Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)

Note: this species was often confused with B. helvola, differing in the C- thallus (C+ red in B. helvola), the thicker paraphysal tips, and the filiform, often curved conidia (bacilliform and straight in B. helvola); on smooth bark of deciduous trees; from the Alps there are only a few scattered records, the older ones from Switzerland are dubious.
