Substrate: siliceous rocks, metal-rich siliceous rocks, intermediate rocks (such as calciferous schists)
Altitudinal range: from the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: an alpine to subnival species, confined to steeply inclined or overhanging surfaces of hard siliceous rocks, often with a high iron content. The basionym is often attributed to Massalongo, but he explicitly attributes the description of the new species to Garovaglio, who also sent him a specimen.
