Substrate: intermediate rocks (such as calciferous schists), siliceous rocks
Altitudinal range: from the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: on inclined to vertical faces of calciferous rocks, especially lime-containing schists; related to L. lapicida, but calcicolous; locally not rare in the Alps, and probably much more widespread, but overlooked.
