Substrate: siliceous rocks, lignum

Altitudinal range: from the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)

Note: M. infumata s.str., a circumarctic-boreal species, is likely to be absent from the Alps, where it has been frequently confused with a saxicolous strain of the M. elegantula-aggregate, which deserves further study.
