Substrate: siliceous rocks, calciferous rocks
Altitudinal distribution: submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus)
Note: a boreal to (mainly) Mediterranean lichen found on exposed siliceous rocks, including pebbles, exceptionally also on limestone; in the past it has been frequently confused with other taxa of the X. pulla-group.
