Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a mild-temperate lichen of siliceous rocks, most frequent near the coast, but also occurring in humid mountain areas. Isidiate and fruiting specimens are often found together, and intermediate specimens are frequent, the isidiate morphs (those with isidioid papillae bearing pycnidia) are better treated at the rank of forma.
