Substrate: calciferous rocks, siliceous rocks, calciferous soil, acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata), plant debris
Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: an arctic-alpine, polymorphic species found on calciferous to neutral or slightly acidic siliceous rocks by streams, often in the splash zone, more rarely on base-rich soil (but spreading from small pebbles), sometimes also amongst bryophytes, usually near or above treeline.
