Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus)
Note: a widespread species reported from Asia, Central and South America, Europe and Africa, including the Canary Islands and the Cape Verde Islands, found on soil and mosses over basic siliceous substrata, in open grasslands and garrigue vegetation, with a few records, mainly from the Southern and Western Alps.
