Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)

Note: a species known from the Central European mountains, the Pyrenees, Norway and the Canary Islands, found on shrubs (often on Rhododendron) in the subalpine belt, especially on the basal parts of stems, where it can be very abundant, sometimes on lignum; probably widespread throughout the Alps.
