Substrate: calciferous rocks, calciferous soil
Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a mainly temperate, ecologically broad-ranging, pioneer species found both on calcareous and on siliceous rocks, and on thin layers of soil, e.g. on walls, pebbles, etc., occasionally also in periodically submerged sites; one of the few species of the genus which occur at low altitudes.
