Altitudinal distribution: montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a species resembling V. obfuscans, with a greyish to greenish-brown thallus with rough areoles, immersed perithecia without involucrellum, and ellipsoid ascospores (to c. 20 µm long); on calcareous rocks and walls at low elevations; widespread throughout Europe, but with a few scattered records from the Alps.
