Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a species resembling X. fulva, forming flattened rosettes with lobes (to 1 mm wide) provided with rhizines, finally ascending and richly branched, the crenulate margins giving raise to blastidia and soralia on the lower side, apothecia rare but quite often with pycnidia containing conidia of variable shapes, often misidentified for other xanthorioid species; based on a type from Western North America where the species is fairly common, also widespread in Europe (most records under the synonym X. poeltii), with a few records from the Western Alps (France).
