Substrate: siliceous rocks, intermediate rocks (such as calciferous schists)
Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: on weathered surfaces of basic siliceous rocks, restricted to dry-continental valleys of the Alps and perhaps more widespread in Eurasia; the variety venostana Poelt differs in the blackish apothecial discs.
