Substrate: calciferous rocks
Altitudinal range: from the alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: a rare species resembling X. domogledensis, with individual thalli (to 25 mm in diam.) in dense populations, marginal lobes convex and hollow, lacking rhizines, towards the centre with a wrinkled upper cortex soon breaking up in coalescing schizidioid masses; on mountain tops of calcareous rocks in exposed sites (high-alpine summits), only known from the type locality in the Eastern Alps (Italy).
