Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the alpine belt (potential vegetation: treeless Alpine grasslands and tundras, to the lower limit of perennial snow and the equilibrium line of glaciers)
Note: a widespread, probably holarctic species found on more or less calcareous boulders in natural habitats, sometimes overgrowing other crustose lichens, with a wide altitudinal range but most common in upland areas; closely related to A. cervina, perhaps more frequent in less exposed situations; widespread and locally common throughout the Alps.
