Altitudinal distribution: subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a species resembling in habitus V. caesiopsila, with a mainly endolithic to very thin epilithic, continuous, brown-grey thallus, the black perithecia (0.2-0.3 mm in diam.) semi-immersed in the rock, more or less spherical, the wall black-brown throughout, 8-spored asci, and ellipsoid to obovoid, simple ascospores (20-25 × 10-13 μm); on dolomite, only known from the type locality in the Eastern Alps (Switzerland).
