Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a species with a thin, episubstratic, smooth to rimose, olive-brown to dark brown thallus with a cyanobacterial photobiont (developing globose cells), scattered, black perithecioid ascomata, fissitunicate asci, 1-septate ascospores, and richly branched hamathecial elements; on often submerged siliceous rocks along streams and margins of lakes; widespread in the Holarctic region, but not common; also recorded from the Western Alps in sites with a untypical ecology, and therefore in need of confirmation.
