Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a species with an endosubstratic thallus visible as smooth whitish-grey patches, ascomata as in L. atomaria but larger (to c. 0.5 mm in diam.), and also considerably larger ascospores (45-70 × 2.5-4 µm); on trunks of Populus, rare in temperate Europe, including the Eastern Alps (Austria), and Eastern North America, most records being historical.
