Substrate: calciferous rocks, intermediate rocks (such as calciferous schists)
Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: an arctic-alpine to boreal-montane, circumpolar species of calcareous rocks, with optimum on limestone and dolomite, but also found on calciferous schist and sandstone in upland areas, sometimes growing in temporarily submerged sites along creeks; widespread throughout the Alps.
