Substrate: siliceous rocks, metal-rich siliceous rocks

Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)

Note: a species with a wide range of genotypes resulting in a number of morphs, growing on metal-rich siliceous rocks at high elevations; widespread in the Holarctic region, including the Alps.
