Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: a taxon with a partially to entirely endolithic thallus and large, epruinose apothecia with a broad margin, the hymenial surface becoming uneven to subgyrose; on sunny surfaces of limestone and dolomite; widespread in Europe and Greenland, and rather common in the Alps.
