Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a mainly southern, perhaps incompletely holarctic species found on steeply inclined, somehow weathered faces of calciferous and basic siliceous rocks with some seepage of water after rain, often in rock fissures and on colonies of cyanobacteria; widespread throughout the Alps, but only locally common.
