Substrate: acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata), living mosses, plant debris, bark
Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: an arctic-alpine, circumpolar species found on windy ridges in moss-lichens heaths, more frequent on siliceous substrata, but sometimes also occurring in areas with dolomite; widespread throughout the Alps.
