Substrate: calciferous soil, acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata), plant debris
Altitudinal range: from the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies) to the nival belt (above the lower limit of perennial snow and glaciers)
Note: a variety without or with a few pycnidia only, and cells of the lower cortex with many oil droplets; on soil over a wide range of rocks; overall distribution arctic-alpine; widespread in the Alps, mainly from the alpine to nival belt, but not always distinguished.
