Substrate: acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata), living mosses, plant debris
Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a mainly western species in Europe, found on acid soil in open situations, such as in Calluna-heaths; most of the records from the Alps (especially the Central and Eastern Alps) require re-confirmation.
