Substrate: acidic soil (mostly on siliceous substrata)
Altitudinal distribution: subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: similar to C. crispata var. cetrariiformis, but with glossy esquamulose podetia with melanotic dying bases; in bogs and mountain heaths; the centre of distribution is in the Arctic and northern boreal zone, with a single record from the Eastern Alps.
