Altitudinal range: from the submediterranean/colline belt (potential vegetation: mixed deciduous forests dominated by Quercus and Carpinus) to the montane belt (potential vegetation: deciduous forests dominated by Fagus sylvatica and closed coniferous forests with Picea abies)
Note: a species resembling C. aurella, but with a grey thallus and apothecia lacking a hypothecial stipe of elongated strongly gelatinised cells, based on a type from Argentina, but also widespread in North America; usually corticolous on the bark of broad-leaved trees, but also on Juniperus and wood, with a few records from the Alps.
