Altitudinal range: from the mesomediterranean belt (potential vegetation: evergreen broad-leaved forests dominated by Quercus ilex) to the subalpine belt (potential vegetation: open, taiga-like forests dominated by Larix decidua and/or Pinus cembra and Rhododendron)
Note: a temperate to boreal-montane, circumpolar species found on periodically wetted, but rapidly drying surfaces of basic siliceous rocks, usually in seepage tracks, with a wide altitudinal range, but usually absent above treeline; widespread throughout the Alps but only locally common.
